7 years ago, Marystown Minor Hockey Association won the Eastlink Food Bank Challenge, Score Big for Food Bank. We won the challenge 2 years in a row…they no longer have that challenge.
But this year, We think we won again in another way. We spent 2 days outside the arena and in the porch braving the cold to collect items for the food bank and serving hot chocolate and popcorn to help raise money towards gift cards. I think we far exceeded the total number of items as in the past, however, we didn’t count, and it ranged from food to toothbrushes to laundry detergent to soap and everything in between that a family could use. And not to mention, we made $500 to purchase gift cards.
We are very proud of the effort of our Hockey Moms & Dads Committee in their food drive efforts. But we are also so proud to be a part of the association where so many people not only donated but came out of their way to make the donation on behalf of the association. We had parents and players drive from Winterland and Burin to do drop-offs because they did not have hockey those evenings. Some even stopped to make sure that we were warm enough and offered hot drinks.
We hope that our donation makes even a slight difference to some families in need. And we hope that everyone enjoyed the popcorn and hot chocolate…especially the little guy that came back the night after asking what time the “hot chocolate and popcorn stand” was opening lol
Merry Christmas!
